Exchange 2007 and IPv6

I just spend 1.5 days trying to understand why I can not install a fresh Exchange 2007 SP1 on fresh Windows 2008 R2 Server. Normally (normally) such Microsoft installations are going OK. If you don’t touch anything.

After the installation of some services it started to give a lot of strange error message. Aparently the Exchange Transport Service could’t find or access the Active Directory topology. The message was:

Topology discovery failed, error 0x80040a02 (DSC_E_NO_SUITABLE_CDC)

Fortunately there is Google. Where you can just copy the error message and almost always find a solution.

After some googling I found my mistake. In fact I did touch something in fresh Windows 2008 Server installation. I’ve disabled IPv6. I don’t know why. Just because I was not planning to use it anyway. We don’t have any IPv6 routing in our network, why should it matter? But it does, for Exchange 2007.

Enabling IPv6 immidiately solved the installation problem. It’s scary a little bit. Even if you installed everything correctly, one wrong step – and you never know where the next problem is coming from.
